Judicial independence is usually understood as involving the independence of the courts from the executive. Judgment writing, independence and collegiality are the themes for my discussion this evening. He was also a staunch advocate of judicial independence.
There can be little doubt that Sir Richard would have understood the demands of judgment writing. Sir Richard had a long and distinguished career as a judge of the Supreme Courts of the Northern Territory and of the ACT, culminating in his appointment as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the ACT.
